Local area and excursions

Everyone’s idea of the perfect holiday is different and the gorgeous region of Lucca, and in particular the Garfagnana, caters for all tastes. The house is perfect for doing nothing in the sunshine, lying by the pool, taking the occasional stroll around the garden, playing ping pong or sketching the fabulous views.

If you are more energetic, there are wonderful walks all around, beautiful hilltop villages, churches and hermitages to explore and the renowned cities of Lucca, Florence and Pisa within very easy reach.

Canalecchia is located above the village of Molazzana and is a short drive from the busy market towns of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Barga, both of which have bustling weekly markets.

The property lies in unspoilt countryside, high in the Garfagnana mountains and hundreds of walks are on the doorstep, ranging from gentle strolls through chestnut woods to the more energetic……………

A local 6 hole (but hilly!) golf course and pony trekking are minutes away.

There is a rich diet of pageants, festivals and markets, especially in the summer months when many areas hold a local feast or sagra to celebrate local produce - involving good, simple food, local wines and plenty of dancing, they are well worth looking out for.

This part of Tuscany is famous not just for its splendid extra-virgin olive oils and fine wines, but also for its busy calendar of cultural and social events. These range from the Puccini Opera Festival at Torre del Lago to the Summer Festival concerts in Lucca and Pistoia Blues to Barga Jazz and the Viareggio Carneval.

Food is taken very seriously in this part of the world and Canalecchia is within easy walking or driving distance of several excellent restaurants, with a strong emphasis on local produce and recipes.

Lucca

The magnificent, walled city of Lucca can be reached in forty minutes and the chic Versilian beach resorts of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio can be reached in an hour , taking a spectacular route over the Apuan Alps. The miracles of Pisa, the Renaissance treasure-trove of Florence and the thermal spas at Montecatini and Bagni di Lucca can easily be reached from Canalecchia. View Map

Genoa and Bologna

The exciting cities of Genoa and Bologna are a little further but well within the scope of  a one day excursion.

Wonderful holidays in Tuscany can be enjoyed all year round from summer sunbathing and outdoor activities to skiing on the slopes of Abetone which are only 40km away.

Canalecchia offers accommodation throughout the year, with central heating a welcome boon in the winter months. The Garfagnana is strikingly beautiful during the winter and is within an hour's drive of local ski resorts.

Canalecchia is, simply, a wonderful holiday villa to rent  to experience self catering in Tuscany or bed and breakfast in Tuscany.
